Rollers mostly hunt for terrestrial or slow-flying large arthropods, mostly grasshoppers, crickets and beetles. They also regularly feed on small mammals, snakes, lizards, and even on frogs.

The species usually hunts from an open perch up to 10m above ground, especially from long, dead branches, tall bushes, fences and electric wires. The type and quality of the perch defines the hunting success of the individuals (Tidmarsh & Corrado 2004).
