On the 22nd August 2015, the Environment Protection Agency of Satu Mare County (APM) installed an exhibition booth on the 14th Hungarian Days in the Partium in the Kossuth Garden of Satu Mare with PR material on the LIFE13 NAT/HU/000081 project titled ‘The conservation of the European roller within the Carpathian Basin’.

2014 was especially good for the roller population in the Bükk region, and 2015 brought success again – with regard to nest box occupation and breeding success.

During the first half of July, several demonstrative events took place throughout the country.
In Pest county, in the Upper Kiskunság, 44 out of the 100 nest boxes were occupied by breeding rollers. We chose six nest boxes for the demonstration of bird ringing. Some nest boxes were brimming with fledglings, whilst in others the female was still incubating eggs - it was quite a diverse day.

We set off early in the morning from Szeged to meet up with the rest of the team near Kecskemét. After the rangers of the Kiskunság National Park Directorate have joined us there, we took off, into the puszta. The sky was overcast and there was a steady drizzle for most of the day. Few scarce rays of sunlight managed to break through but we did not mind the weather at all – it was much better than the sizzling heat so typical of June!

BirdLife Hungary organizes field days to demonstrate ringing activities for the public in the Bükk, the Budapest, the Hajdú-Bihar and the Csongrád regions. The events will be run within the framework of the ’ Conservation of the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) within the Carpathian Basin’ project. Roller nest boxes shall be checked at four localities and those chicks that are large enough to be ringed, will receive their individual markings. The event is a wonderful opportunity to observe these fantastically coloured birds close-up.

The Environment Protection Agency of Satu Mare has organised a final evaluation of the jubilee publication of the international environment education programme titled „Life for the environment, life for the people” on the World Environment Day (2015.06.05.). The event took place in the Hám János Roman Catholic Theological Liceum, with the main theme of „7 billion dreams on one planet – let us consume more moderately”.

The use of baling twine is widespread in all agricultural areas. Unfortunately the inadequate waste disposal is also widespread when it comes to baling, and many of the farmers are still unaware of the negative environmental impact of loose baling twine in the agricultural fields.
